How the Family Business Consulting Group Brought 19 Years of Financial History Into Sage Intacct
Since 1994, The Family Business Consulting Group has provided financial planning services for families and the enterprises they have built. As the firm continued to grow, its leadership decided to modernize its financial systems by transitioning from QuickBooks to Sage Intacct to gain access to stronger reporting capabilities and a more scalable financial platform.
Standard Sage Intacct Migration Approach Excludes Comprehensive Transactional History
Several months into the implementation project, Accounting Manager Paige Gomez, who was leading the transition internally, learned that Sage Intacct’s standard migration approach at that time, included trial balance summaries only, rather than full historical transaction detail.
For many companies, that level of migration is sufficient. But for The Family Business Consulting Group, detailed historical records were essential.
Because the firm advises multi-generational families and their businesses, it often needs to reference financial activity spanning many years. Maintaining access to nearly two decades of transaction history was critical to the firm’s operations and its ability to serve clients effectively.
Without a full migration, the firm would have needed to maintain QuickBooks alongside Sage Intacct simply to access historical records. That approach would have created inefficiencies and limited the firm’s ability to analyze historical financial trends within its new system.
Recognizing the limitations of a summary-only migration, the implementation team referred the firm to Platform Transition to help preserve their detailed financial history.
Platform Transition Migrates and Dimensionalizes 19 Years of Transactions
Platform Transition worked with the Family Business Consulting Group to migrate 19 years of detailed financial history, totaling approximately 500,000 transaction lines, from QuickBooks into Sage Intacct.
Beyond simply transferring data, the project involved converting the firm’s historical data into Sage Intacct’s dimensional accounting structure. Instead of recreating the workarounds that had been necessary in QuickBooks, Platform Transition worked closely with Paige to design data structures that would fully support Sage Intacct’s reporting capabilities.
“Hugh asked very pointed questions about our data and how we were going to use it, and he really pushed me,” Paige said.
Those conversations helped ensure that The Family Business Consulting Group would be able to take full advantage of the advanced reporting capabilities of Sage Intacct.
Unified Financial Data Improves Reporting and Eliminates Dual Systems
Once the data mapping process was complete, the migration itself moved quickly. Platform Transition completed the data conversion over two weekends.
“It was a lot of data, and it all came over flawlessly,” Paige said.
By bringing the firm’s full transaction history into Sage Intacct, the migration eliminated the need to maintain a legacy QuickBooks system for reference.
“We don’t have to marry two systems — the legacy system and the new system,” Paige said. “That will give us an increased ability to prepare metrics for our company and to continue to provide seamless information.”
With its full financial history available inside Sage Intacct, the Family Business Consulting Group gained the ability to generate reports, analyze trends, and support its advisory services using a single, modern financial platform.
